Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a model of therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to process upsetting events and memories to help you heal. The stimulation in my sessions comes from watching my fingers or alternating taps, whichever works best for you. EMDR positively impacts our brain functioning, allowing upsetting events to be remembered without the distress and symptoms associated with it. A fully processed memory will no longer produce nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety, negative self concept, or emotional upset when recalled.
EMDR is an effective, proven, and short term treatment.
What does EMDR treat?
Research has shown EMDR to be a "gold standard treatment" for experiencing or witnessing traumas like
-Any traumatic event leading to PTSD
-Stress resulting from natural disaster, accidents, vocation (i.e. first responders, police, firefighters, nurses, etc...)
Research indicates that EMDR is showing effectiveness as a treatment for
-Fears and Phobias
-Body Dysmorphic disorder
-Chronic Pain such as fibromyalgia, headaches, etc...
One person had this to say about EMDR:
"EMDR changed my life. It is one of the best things that have ever happened to me. It helped me feel better about myself, about the things that I experienced, and it gave me a new way of looking at things. I was having nightmares from past traumas sometimes 4 times per week. Since I did EMDR, I haven't had trauma related nightmares in over a year. It benefited my marriage and my spiritual life by helping me become a healthier person."
