What's with all the birds?

January 4, 2017

If you've been to my office, you've seen my business card, or heck just perused this site, you've probably thought to yourself, what's with all the birds? Is she just like obsessed or something? Well, yes....and no. Makes sense, right? Ha!

Birds are full of symbolism. Various cultures have different ideas of what birds represent but common themes are of freedom. Of love. Of peace. Even of healing. In our wildest dreams, I'm probably not the only one who's dreamed of flying. When we've been through tough life circumstances or we've felt trapped in anxiety, depression, shame...don't we dream of flying? I chose birds as my symbol for therapy because it's my commitment to you: I will help you fly.

By now you've likely figured out that I'm a lover of literature and no blog on birds, symbolism, freedom, or feeling trapped would be complete without the poem I have written out below. It was my inspiration for therapy and for using birds as my muse. It so beautiful represents what it's like to be trapped and what it's like to be free.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps on the back
Of the wind and floats downstream
Till the current ends and dips his wing
In the orange suns rays
And dares to claim the sky.

But a BIRD that stalks down his narrow cage
Can seldom see through his bars of rage
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
Of things unknown but longed for still
And his tune is heard on the distant hill for
The caged bird sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze
And the trade winds soft through
The sighing trees
And the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright
Lawn and he names the sky his own.

But a caged BIRD stands on the grave of dreams
His shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
His wings are clipped and his feet are tied
So he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings with
A fearful trill of things unknown
But longed for still and his
Tune is heard on the distant hill
For the caged bird sings of freedom.
